Hello and welcome to Nirvania! I’m a writer, teacher, editor, and lover of this gorgeous and mysterious world, currently making my home in rural Nova Scotia.
Writing is my way of listening. In my essays and fiction, particularly my recent novel Night in the World, I explore how we might dissolve what separates us from each other and the Earth, and foster relationships of deep kinship and authenticity. I'm drawn especially to the relationship between people and place: how places shape, guide, and root us in time and space.
Over the years I've been inspired by and involved with a number of groups committed to restorative art and teaching, including Deena Metzger's literature of restoration and 19 Ways to the Fifth World, the Dark Mountain Project, and the Persephone Project.
In 2021 my husband and I moved from our long-time home in Toronto to an old farm in East Hants county, Nova Scotia, part of the traditional Mi’kma’ki territory. I began writing an essay series on my web site about the experience of making relationship with the seasons, woods and fields of this radically new territory, on the banks of the great Shubenacadie River. My vision for that series has expanded into Nirvania, a site that will explore the same theme for a broader audience, and include other voices in this conversation.
